Magic: The Gathering – March Of The Machine Previews

Armed with the Realmbreaker tree and a renewed confidence after her victory in Phyrexia: All Will Be One, Elesh Norn has finally begun her full scale invasion of Magic: The Gathering’s Multiverse. From Amonkhet to Zendikar, nowhere is safe from compleation – and with many of our usual heroes already fallen to the Phyrexians, everybody, planeswalker or not, has to stand and fight.

March of the Machine is the culmination of a years-long story arc. An event bigger than even the War of the Spark back in 2019, this set will visit countless planes and see the devastation the Phyrexians have caused. Don’t miss out on any spoilers, as this is going to be one of the most important sets MTG has received in years.

Updated April 5 at 18:43 by Joe Parlock: And with that, the March of the Machine preview season draws to a close. The final day had an eye-watering amount of cards revealed, including all five Commander decks, the draft archetypes for the main set, and a ton of reprints for the Multiverse Legends collection. It even included the return of all ten Companion creatures to the game, ensuring this draft environment could be very interesting indeed.

Day Seven Previews

Corrupted Conviction by Joseph Weston

As March of the Machine’s previews roll to a close, the final day focused less on the big, splashy rares and mythics, and more on the draft environment.

With these reveals, we got a really good understanding of the limited environment for March of the Machine. White/blue’s Knight archetype seems particularly interesting, as it finally brings together Knights from settings like Eldraine, Alara, and Dominaria under one banner.

Red and green are probably the most novel archetype this time around, with an emphasis on battles, and big payoffs for attacking them. For instance, Rampaging Geoderm, the archetype’s signpost creature, gives you +1/+1 counters for attacking them, rather than a more temporary buff for hitting anything else.

We also got the final battle of the set, with Invasion of Amonkhet turning into a Zombie that can clone an creature in any graveyard, which makes it ripe for combo potential.

Day Six Previews

Urabrask by Campbell White

Day six was all about double-faced cards, with lots of battles, transforming cardss, and even cards that reward you for playing other double-faced cards all included in the reveals. We also got Urabrask, the final of the five Phyrexian Praetor cards, and it’s potentially one of the most powerful Praetor cards seen so far.

Vigilance, menace, lifelink

Whenever Kroxa and Kunoros enters the battlefield or attacks, you may exile five cards from your graveyard. When you do, return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield.

First, let’s get straight to Urabrask. The Red Phyrexian has a bit of a history of having underwhelming cards in comparison to the other Praetors, but finally he has his time to shine with an utterly incredible card. It pings your opponents for damage, gives you mana, and then transforms to let you play spells from anyone’s graveyard to keep the ball rolling.

Most importantly, Urabrask transforms back into his front face the same turn you get access to those graveyards, so you could easily cast enough one-mana spells to transform Urabrask again in the same turn and start the Saga a second time. If you combine this with cards like Birgi, God of Storytelling, Flame-kiln Artist, and Guttersnipe, and Urabrask immediately becomes a huge boon for spellsinging decks.

Of course, there are other cards to point out here as well. Invasion of Gobakhan fills the same hand-destruction taxing effect space as Elite Spellbinder, before transforming into Lightshield Array and giving you a way to protect your go-wide strategies.

Rona, Herald of Invasion could be a potentially explosive card for Legends-matter decks, especially if you combo it with something like Relic of Legends and zero-cost permanents like Mox Amber to continually tap and untap Rona.

Finally, we have Kroxa and Unoros, the Theros team-up card. Flavour-wise it’s a bit confusing, as Kunoros has always been about preventing creature recursion, but the addition of Kroxa turns it into a powerful tool for it instead. A red, white, and black card with an attack trigger immediately screams „Isshin“ too, which is always nice.

Day Five Previews

Grandmother Ravi Sengir by Viko Menezes

The weekend continues to be a quiet time for preview season, with the invasion taking a breather and only showing off a few cards. Phyrexian-lovers should pay attention, though, as there’s a lot of creature type payoffs to get excited about.

When Bloated Processor dies, incubate X, where X is its power. (Create an Incubator token with X +1/+1 counters on it and „2 generic: Transform this artifact“. It transforms into a 0/0 Phyrexian artifact creature.)

Invasion of Ulgrotha//Grandmother Ravi Sengir

Four generic, one black battle – Siege – Five starting defence

(As a Siege enters, choose an opponent to protect it. You and others can attack it. When it’s defeated, exile it, then cast it transformed.)

Grandmother Ravi Sengir

Legendary creature – Human Wizard – 3/3

Flying

Whenever a creature an opponent controls dies, put a +1/+1 counter on Grandmother Ravi Sengir and you gain one life.

Glistening Dawn

Two generic, two green sorcery

Incubate X twice, where X is the number of lands you control. (To incubate X, create an Incubator token with X +1/+1 counters on it and „2 generic: Transform this artifact“. It transforms into a 0/0 Phyrexian artifact creature.)

Day five of previews put a little more emphasis on how the Phyrexian creature type strategy will work, with a handful of cards all caring about Phyrexians you control in one way or another.

For instance, Phyrexian Awakening gives your Phyrexians vigilence, and lets you make a big 4/4 through incubating. Meanwhile, Phyrexian Censor rewards you for casting Phyrexian spells, and, more importantly, prevents your opponents from storming off or taking you down through aggro.

In black, we got Bloated Processor, which gives you an instant-speed sacrifice outlet, provided you have enough Phyrexians to throw to it. Combine that with Grandmother Ravi Sengir, and you could be making two very big creatures with ease.

So far, incubate has been kept pretty conservative, with 4/4s and larger being rare. With Glistening Dawn, we’re suddenly making much, much bigger cinubator tokens, and two of them to boot. Having enough lands to make this worthwhile also means you have enough mana to transform them straight away, which makes this a solid tool in a set where green has frequently felt a bit lacking.

Day Four Previews

Invasion of Kamigawa by Kekai Kotaki

The fourth day of previews was the start of the slower weekend and, annoyingly, also April Fool’s Day. With fake cards and hoax reveals abound, here are the handful of real reveals for March of the Machine. To make up for it, it also included possibly one of the best white boardwipes ever printed.

Image

Text

Invasion of Belenon//Belenon War Anthem

Invasion of Belenon

Two generic, one white battle – Siege – Five starting defence

(As a Siege enters, choose an opponent to protect it. You and others can attack it. When it’s defeated, exile it, then cast it transformed.)

When Invasion of Belenon enters the battlefield, create a 2/2 white and blue Knight creature token with vigilance.

Belenon War Anthem

Enchantment

Creatures you control get +1/+1

Sunfall

Three generic, two white sorcery

Exile all creatures. Incubate X, where X is the number of creatures exiled this way. (Create an Incubator token with X +1/+1 counters on it and „2 generic: Transform this artifact“. It transforms into a 0/0 Phyrexian artifact creature.)

With only two cards revealed on day four, there isn’t a whole lot to look at. What we do have is really interesting, though.

The first is Invasion of Belenon, a plane we’ve only seen a couple of times over the years. Famed for being incredibly windy and inhabited by Loxodon and Rhox, its invasion card is instead a pretty generic buff spell.

Knights appear to be the white/blue archetype for March of the Machine, meaning you could run this nicely alongside Invasion of Xerex for some Knight token fun, but the work to get a basic +1/+1 buff from Belenon War Anthem doesn’t seem worthwhile.

Sunfall, on the other hand, is incredible. Most five-mana boardwipes in white merely destroy the board, whereas this exiles it – getting around indestructible creatures and shutting down graveyard recursion. It then gives you a massive Incubator token to flip and protect yourself from the inevitable crackback of casting such a devastating card.

Does it contribute to indestructible seemingly getting worse and worse every day with a deluge of exile effects? Yes. Is this also going to see play in a whole load of formats? Absolutely yes.

Day Three Previews

Sheoldred by Ryan Pancoast

The third day of previews was all about transforming, with not just plenty of new battles, but also two of the Phyrexian Praetors, and a number of creatures who’ve fallen to their corruption.

Green is getting even more excellent tools in day three, with a new card for the mysterious Ikorian artifact, the Ozolith. Ozolith, Shattered Spire might not be as widely-usable in Commander as its colourless predecessor, but the ability to reliably put +1/+1 counters on things as makes it potentially a new staple for green.

We also saw Ancient Imperiosaur, a huge, stompy payoff for go-wide convoke decks. Mono-Green Devotion in Pioneer is going to definitely be eyeing up this card, as tapping eight creatures will make this a terrifyingly huge 22/22 with trample.

All three of the new red battle cards are excellent. The Invasion of Kaldheim rewards you for defeating it by having a way to dump lands int your graveyard, which in the right deck will always be a strong effect.

Meanwhile, the Invasion of Karsus is a pseudo-boardwipe for four mana that can clear the board of most token creatures. On the other side, it’s a really nice tool for Spellslinger, Burn, or Cheerios decks that want to cast lots of spells.

Finally, the Invasion of Innistrad might be slightly costly at four maana, but it’s a realiable, instant-speed way to get rid of even indestructible creatures with ease, while having a later added bonus of a few Zombie tokens. It will be interesting to see how much the black/heavy metagame for Standard takes to this.

Day Two Previews

Storm the Seedcore by Jason Rainville

The first full day of previews had a heavy focus on green. Considering green has a relatively underutilised colour in recent Standard formats, it will be interesting to see whether March of the Machine’s fighting focus for the colour will help push it up in competitive play more.

Target player draws two cards. You may put an artifact card from your hand onto the battlefield. Create a token that’s a copy of a target permanent you control. Distribute three +1/+1 counters among one, two, or three target permanents you control. Destroy target permanent an opponent controls.

Highlights from day two include Sandstalker Moloch, which has a similar effect to the ever-popular Collected Company, albeit it requires your opponent to have cast a blue or black spell in the same turn to be most effective.

We also got Invasion of Shandalar, one of the new battle cards that is potentially one of the most powerful green recursion tools ever seen. As long as you can flip it into Leyline Surge, you’ll also be completely skipping casting costs for a permanent each turn, which is incredible. It remains to be seen just how difficult it will be to defeat a Siege, but if it’s easy enoguh, this could be one to watch.

Outside of green, red got a new damage-multiplying tool with City on Fire. This is arguably a better Fiery Emancipation, thanks to the addition of convoke as a way to reduce the cost. I almost want to try and get both out in play at once, and turn two damage into 18.

Of course, the real highlight of this day’s previews was Inga and Esika, one of the many team-up legendary creatures in March of the Machine. The effect gives each creature you cast a pseudo-convoke, and it helps refill your hand at the same time. Sure, whatever, but look at that art. The rainbow bridge, the cats pulling Esika’s chariot, the colours, it’s a big departure from the grim horror of the Phyrexians and it looks fantastic.

Day One Previews

Teferi Akosa of Zhalfir by Chris Rallis

The first day of March of the Machine’s previews was absolutely massive, with almost 100 cards, three new mechanics, five precon commanders, and a whole load of Planechase cards all revealed.

It’s almost impossible to pick a few key cards out of such a bumper crop of reveals, but there are a few worth pointing out. The first is Elesh Norn herself, with her transforming Saga card not only punishing your opponent for dealing damage to you, but also wiping the board potentially every three turns – provided you can keep making creatures to sacrifice.

Ikoria’s famous Sharknado has been compleated, with Shark Typhoon now becoming a creature itself with Chrome Host Seedshark. It uses the new incubate mechanic instead of producing Shark tokens, which makes it slower and easier to block, but it’s also much cheaper than Shark Typhoon, which could even things out.

The Invasion of Dominaria is one of the new battle cards revealed, which forces your opponent to protect it from damage to prevent you from transforming the battle into something much scarier, like Marchesa, Resolute Monarch. Being able to remove counters from any permanent just by attacking is wild – you can reset Sagas, kill planeswalkers, defeat more battles, or just weaken your opponent’s creatures by taking those +1/+1 counters off them.

Halo Forager looks set to be incredibly powerful, thanks to its ability allowing you to cast spells out of your opponents‘ graveyards as well as your own.

Finally, we’ve got Etali, Primal Conquerer and its much more exciting transformed side, Etali, Primal Sickness. If your opponent has no way of blocking this, Primal Sickness is a one-hit kill thanks to it giving your opponent 11 poison counters all at once.

March Of The Machine Commander Decks

Brimaz, Blight of Oreskos by Uriah Voth

Launching alongside March of the Machine are five preconstructed Commander decks. Like most other Commander releases, these will have a mixture of reprints and brand-new cards.

However, unlike most other decks, March of the Machine marks the return of Planechase. Planechase adds a more unpredictable element to your games through the use of oversized Plane cards, and a Planar die to allow the whole table to move from plane to plane and tackle different effects.

Each deck will include ten Planechase cards – again, some reprints, and some new. They will all also include a new mana rock artifact designed specifically for use with planechase:

Call For Backup

Backup is one of the new mechanics introduced in March of the Machine, and this red, green, and white deck’s commander Bright-Palm, Soul Awakener helps make the creatures you backed up get damage through even more easily.

Meanwhile, the secondary commander, Shalai and Hallar, instead turns your +1/+1 counters into damage. We just saw a similar effect to this with All Will Be One, and thanks to cards like The Red Terror could be a powerful combo commander.

Tinker Time

We’ve had a lot of artifact-themed Commander decks in recent sets, but the green, blue, and red Tinker Time deck instead focuses on having as many different types of artifact tokens as possible. Food, Treasure, Gold, Clues, Blood, Thopters, and more are likely to show up thanks to its commander, Gimbal, Gremlin Prodigy.

The secondary commander, Rashmi and Ragavan, brings back Kaladesh’s famous monkey, meaning he appears three different times in March of the Machine. This time, he and Rashmi are all about ‚impulsive draw‘ – exiling cards from the top of your library and casting them with the Treasure token you produce.

Divine Convocation

The red/blue archetype of the main March of the Machine set is focused on convoke, a mechanic that lets you tap creatures to pay for a spell’s mana cost. Its commander, Kasla, the Broken Halo, rewards you for casting convoke spells with scrying and card draw.

Arguably, the secondary commander, Saint Traft and Rem Karolus, is a better convoke commander than Kasla. It easily makes creature tokens you can use to convoke later spells, and with a few untap tools like Staff of Domination you could be convoking even the biggest spells with ease.
